How the value of money across years is calculated
Annual inflation rates are chained. If inflation is 5% in year one and 10% in year two, prices rise 1.05 × 1.10 = 1.155 times, i.e. 15.5%, not 15%.
Price factor = (1 + inflation year 1) × (1 + inflation year 2) × …
- Equivalent price/salary = starting amount × price factor. Something that cost Rp1,000,000 in 2010 needs more money to buy in 2025.
- Remaining purchasing power = starting amount ÷ price factor. Rp1,000,000 kept in a drawer since 2010 only buys what a fraction of that would have bought at 2010 prices.
