The 16 digits of a NIK
| Digits | Meaning |

| 1–2 | Province code |
| 3–4 | Regency/city code |
| 5–6 | District (kecamatan) code |
| 7–12 | Date of birth (DDMMYY); for women 40 is added to the day |
| 13–16 | Registration serial number |
The region code is where the NIK was first issued, not necessarily where the person lives now.

A NIK is personal data. Do not share KTP photos or numbers casually, especially with anyone offering loans or prizes.

Is my NIK sent to a server?
No. The breakdown happens entirely in your browser and the NIK is not added to the page address.
Does this confirm the NIK is registered?
No. It only checks the format. Registration can only be checked through official Dukcapil services.
Why is the district code not found?
The area may have been split or recoded after the NIK was issued.
